Another problem that affects stability is the complexity of the Windows interface to applications programs. Many mature applications contained serious bugs that caused them to crash with the message UAE, Unexpected Application Error, if they were pushed too hard. This sort of error is quite unfamiliar to the typical MS-DOS user, although Mac users have been putting up with similar behaviour from their operating system for years, the only difference being that the Mac operating system shows friendly icon in the shape of a bomb with a smouldering fuse for a system error! Systems and users varied in the number of UAEs that they experienced. Systems that had subtle setup errors or limited resources produced UAEs more often than standard systems with plenty of RAM and disk space. Users varied in how much they expected from the system in terms of the number of applications running and how careful they were about accessing the same file more than once! Good systems and careful users suffered roughly one UAE every two weeks of use. Poor systems and ambitious users would see one or two UAEs a day. Windows 3.0 gained a reputation for being unstable.
