The description of Windows 3 so far
makes it sound as if there could be no better environment for a 386/486
machine. But Windows isn’t without its faults. For one thing, it can be very
difficult to set up to run reliably on some hardware. The trouble usually stems
from the age of the design and, in the case of 386/486 machines, usually from
an incompatible BIOS ROM or non-standard disk drives. The disk drive problem
has more or less been cured in Windows 3.1 and it is reasonably easy to replace
the BIOS ROM once you are sure that this is the cause. Even so, these
difficulties have given Windows 3 the reputation for being an awkward piece of
software to install.
